Second post

Skt. Clemens Bro
Our second post!

We have chosen Skt. Clemens Bro as location for our intervention. The bridge connects Store Torv (which is located at the end of the pedestrianized street) and Søndergade (the other end of the pedestrianized street). The bridge is currently used for transporting people from A to B, which we believe is a shame. We made an analysis of the space of Skt. Clemens Bro:

Scenographic-social
As pedestrians approach the area of Sankt Clemens Bro, either from Søndergadeor Sankt Clemens Torv, they are meet with a much wider pedestrian area that feels warm and welcoming. This is the result of transferring from a narrow, busy pedestrian streets, that sometimes feels suffocating with its tall buildings, into an area that allows for much more sunlight and personal space. On sunny days, it creates a reminisce of a beautiful European metropolis and this is further strengthened by the sight of Aarhus Cathedral in the background, which rises majestically as one of landmarks of the city. When crossing the bridge, pedestrians are able to absorb the cozy, social, Danish atmosphere that erupts from Åboulevarden. However, the bridge itself does not offer much in the effort of creating a social space (except during special events).
Iconographic
There isn’t a lot of iconographic on the bridge, the bridge itself can represent a variety of symbols, connecting two places, a crossing and the end and the start of something. From the bridges it is possible to see a lot of names and icons on different stores.

Aesthetics
The bridge has a wooden deck in a steel frame and the railing is made of steel with a wood handle. The wooden deck makes it clear that you are on a bridge and give you the feeling of crossing something. As opposed to the rest of the pedestrianized street, Clemens Bro is covered with wood. The different style of pavement on Clemens Bro supports the idea of it being a passage which needs to be passed. This effect supports the feeling of Clemens Bro being a mean to get from a to b. This is an issue, that we need to be aware of, since it works against our concept, which will be explained later in this assignment. The space is open and wide and allows the sunlight to get in, which is very different to the rest of the pedestrian street. The wood gives a warmer feeling in contrast to the cold materials in the rest of the street. This feeling could be a factor in keeping the pedestrians on the bridge for a longer period.

So where are we?
We are discussing several different ideas and we are using today to build mock ups and scenarios, to get a better overview of the potentiel and difficulties of the different ideas.

The next spot will be showing our different scenarios.
